Air (Re)form

The wind environment in the upper atmosphere has always been recognized as the extreme condition, from which the interior space of a high-rise building need to be isolated. The isolation would not only bring large amounts of horizontal payloads to the high-rise building structure, but also turn the interior space into an environment with only artificial ventilation. Confronting these issues, we propose to rebuild the connections between interior and exterior; in order to reintroduce the natural ventilation into the future high-rise building life in Hong Kong,

In doing so, we investigate the relationship between wind forces (air behaviours) and building form. Instead of using the core of the high-rise building mainly for circulation, we propose a vertical wind tunnel with a series of openings to connect the interior space with natural wind conditions. By correlating the distribution of its openings and the vibration form of its surface, the tunnel is not only capable of managing the wind velocity, but also could reshape the form of the air behaviour to create suitable conditions for human activities.

Through a series of experiments and simulations on the air behaviours, we have revalued the performance of the building form in responding to the natural wind condition. Thus, turning the air behaviour into an active factor to reform the relationship between the interior and the exterior environment; eventually establishing new types of the high-rise building as well as the high-rise urban life in Hong Kong.
