LIVING ROOM IN THE STREET

Chu Paul

The project depicts the living condition in Ping Lai Path, Kwai Chung, Hong Kong where low income families, new immigrants are concentrated. Living in ‘sub-divided units’ (rental units resulting from illegally subdividing old residential unit into tiny individual compartments by flat owners) with median floor area 5.3m2 per capita, dwellers cook with mini-electric pans next to the beds, some inside the toilets, children do their homework on the beds in the poorly ventilated, cramped rental spaces. Though paying rent of US$1200/month for the 10m2 sub-divided spaces, the units are so cramped that force dwellers to go down to Ping Lai Path for living, dining, laundry, studying and praying purpose. This makes, progressively, the urban gap a vivid ‘living room’ for local Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalese, Bangladeshis, Sri-Lankans, etc. to intermingle.

Thanks for the support from Urban Renewal Fund of Hong Kong Urban Renewal Authority, and effort of HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre and Chu Hai College of Higher Education, Ping Lai Path was beautified to become a ‘Community of Harmony’ through social integration and social empowerment. Under the guidance of social workers of HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre, residents organize bottom-up initiatives such as guided tours, communal events, making Ping Lai Path a miniature of culture diversity with a generosity and inclusivity to facilitate better humanity and sustainability in the district.
