The “SADNESS” behind Urban Sophistication

Barrie Ho Architecture Interiors

Behind the superficial skin of the sophisticated high-rise provoked in Hong Kong, the sadness of urban dwellers, without any architectural training, among different building typology has been exploring the ultra impartress of spaces and places. The installation is an experiment of an attempt and also a metaphor of exploring the dark unknown side of a metropolitan high density city to UNMASK the urban sophistication to fundamental reality. The number of people living below the poverty line rose to 1.35 million in 2016 among population of 7million, about 20% of the city’s population. The minimum average area of the ‘coffin cubicle’ or ‘caged home’ is less than 5sq.m. The sadness behind the urban sophistication and salute to the urban dwellers (architects without architectural training) is an attempt to contrast and highlight the true mask in a metropolitan city. It is the cost of the high-rise sophistication resulted from ambiguities in the high density city- Hong Kong.

在香港崇尚美輪美奐、現代化高樓的氛圍下,隱藏著基層市民的悲鳴 – 他們需與狹窄的居住環境中,不斷擴展及探索空間的可塑性。
